Thorns and circles

I think the bright colors and round shape of the bouncy balls are perfect for the character "Ukeru-chan®". The pop colors also give off a bright image of New York, which I will be visiting for the first time. I wanted to create a fun piece that would lift the spirits of those who see it.

The 525 bouncy balls are sandwiched between acrylic and secured in place with the same number of push pins from the back. The acrylic base is the same as the cover used for the front of a poster frame. Since the base is transparent acrylic, depending on how it is displayed, people can stand in the background of the work, which I think will create an interesting picture that no one has ever seen before.

I struggled to figure out how to secure the sphere of the bouncy ball to the acrylic without cutting it. The simple character "Ukeru-chan®". In order to faithfully reproduce its shape, I first sandwiched a full-sized poster between the acrylic and the bouncy balls as a guide, and then secured each bouncy ball to the back of the acrylic with push pins. Once all the pins had been stuck into the balls and secured in place, we had to remove the posters by removing the pins one by one, which was a very difficult task. I've pricked my finger with a pin a few times...

The message behind this project is that "May people all over the world enjoy the benefits of healthy and happy everyday life."

スーパーボールが放つ鮮やかな色とまん丸い形が「ウケるちゃん®」というキャラクターにぴったりだと思っています。POPな色は、これから初めて訪れるNYの晴れやかなイメージでもあります。作品を見た人の心も弾む楽しい作品を作りたいと思いました。

525個のスーパーボールは間にアクリルを挟み、裏から同数の押しピンで刺して固定しています。土台のアクリルはポスターの額縁の表面カバーに使用されていたものです。ベースが透明なアクリルなので、展示方法によっては、作品の背景に人が立つこともでき、それは誰も見たことのない面白い絵になるのではないかな？と思っています。

スーパーボールという球体を切ったりせずにアクリルにどうやって固定すべきか悩みました。シンプルなキャラクター「ウケるちゃん®」。その形を忠実に再現するために、初めはアクリルとスーパーボールの間に原寸のポスターを目印として挟み、スーパーボールを一つずつアクリルの裏から押しピンで固定していきました。一旦スーパーボールを全部刺し固定し終わった後で、間に挟まっているポスターを外すために、再度、スーパーボールに刺した押しピンを一個一個外していくという作業がとても大変でした。押しピンが何度か指に刺さったことも…。
